Minister for Home Affairs Kajsa Ollongren has opened the pavilion of straw, made by Straw Blocks Systems in the testing ground of BuildinG on Zernike Campus on Wednesday the 14th of August. The Straw Pavilion has been designed and built by Pim Hondeveld and Peter Davids of Straw Blocks Systems, together with students of the Academy for Architecture & Built Environment of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen.
Prefab elements of straw
Straw Blocks Systems wants to show that you can build free of format, strong and modern with straw. The company produces LEGO like profiled blocks. To work with untreated bales of straw they have created their own machines. The straw blocks, put in a light wooden frame, are made into prefab elements for frontage, floor, roof and inner walls. The blocks have a high insulating value and are 'damp-open' for an agreeable indoor climate.
TNO has tested a trial wall made with these blocks on the vibration table, with a positive result.
Testing facilities at BuildinG
Minister Ollongren opened not only the new Straw Pavilion. She also got informed about the testing facilities for earthquake resilient building at Building and the innovations in the field of sustainable and circular building.
