Registration for the First Edition of the Groningen Marathon, powered by Campus Groningen
Starting Tuesday, December 18, runners can register for the very first edition of the Groningen Marathon powered by Campus Groningen, which will take place on Sunday, May 31, 2026. Following the success of the first Half Marathon in 2025, Golazo Events is seizing this opportunity to expand the event with a full marathon distance.
A new milestone for Groningen
Under the official name ‘Marathon Groningen powered by Campus Groningen’, the city will now have a full marathon. After the start at the Zernike Campus Groningen, the route will take participants past iconic landmarks, through the city center, and through the northern and southern outskirts of Groningen. This will allow runners to see the best of the city and experience Groningen at its best.
Further development of the success
The event is a logical next step after the Groningen Half Marathon, the first edition of which was held this year. In addition to the marathon, the half marathon will also remain part of the program, together with the 10 km and a 2.5 km Kids Run. Companies are also invited to participate by registering for the Business Run on the 10 km and the Half Marathon.
Growth potential and number of participants
"The first edition of the Half Marathon attracted no fewer than 9,000 participants, which was very satisfying. At the same time, we saw room for further growth. The addition of a marathon distance is challenging, but fits in with the ambitions of the event," says Project Manager Johan Meijer. For this first edition, the number of full marathon runners is capped at 2,500 participants. Golazo expects 15,000 runners to participate in the entire event.
Collaboration with Campus Groningen
Campus Groningen is once again a partner of the Marathon this year. As with the previous half marathon, the start and finish will take place at the Zernike Campus. Campus Groningen and its partners are once again making a valuable contribution as supporting partners.
Lisanne Brakenhoff, manager of Campus Groningen, is eagerly looking forward to the Groningen Marathon, powered by Campus Groningen: "The Marathon embodies the ambition that our region stands for: think big, do big. Together with our partners, we will use this event to show how innovation, sport, and a healthy living environment reinforce each other. We are seizing this moment to showcase the power of our campus and the innovative ideas that arise here, and to present Groningen as the forerunner in knowledge, talent, and future-oriented entrepreneurship."
Municipality of Groningen
Inge Jongman, alderwoman for sports in the municipality of Groningen, is delighted with the expansion to a full marathon: “After the success of the Half Marathon, this is an important and wonderful next step. It's great news for all sports enthusiasts in the city and surrounding area. May 31 is a day to look forward to.”
